HTML Basics - Introduction to Web Design

HTML, CSS and Javascript - a broad field

Web design and programming are a craft that you have to work on. Today, join the HTML of the early days of the web

Template for a simple HTML page

These lines are the template for a minimal HTML page:

Simple HTML template
<!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8" /> <title>HTML lernen</title> <style></style> </head> <body> Lorem ipsum Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Mauris ante neque, vehicula quis, convallis sit amet, vestibulum ornare, arcu. Donec at lorem et elit congue dictum. Cras sapien ligula, rutrum quis, posuere id, faucibus id, risus. Maecenas sed est volutpat arcu adipiscing tempus. Sed dictum mauris euismod mauris. </body> </html>

Copy the lines into a program editor (e.g. Notepad on the PC, Textwrangler for the Mac), save them (with the file extension .htm or .html) and use a browser (menu fileopen file) to open.

The first thing we notice is that the browser ignores the line breaks and swallows consecutive spaces.

Lorem ipsum Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Mauris ante neque, vehicula quis, convallis sit amet, vestibulum ornare, arcu. Donec at lorem et elit congue dictum. Cras sapien ligula, rutrum quis, posuere id, faucibus id, risus. Maecenas sed est volutpat arcu adipiscing tempus. Sed dictum mauris euismod mauris.

File names for HTML pages

A word about the filenames of HTML pages: They should not contain any umlauts, any special characters except hyphens, and no spaces. In addition, Swedish, English and Italian keyboards do not have German umlauts - if a visitor from Sweden should go to the page directly?

If you create and test the HTML page on your own computer, everything looks good, but most web servers run with a Unix operating system that does not accept umlauts in the file name as planned, but encodes special characters, e.g. spaces with% 20.

For the sake of recognition, it is best to separate individual terms with hyphens or underscores.

This not only applies to the file names of HTML pages, but also to images, PDF documents, CSS and Javascript files.
