Is Magento better than Etsy

15 Shopify Alternatives - Can the Ecommerce Giant Rival All?

Shopify is undisputedly one of the best online store solutions, but today I'm going to introduce you to a few alternatives. It is true that the provider has become more and more popular since it was officially on the market in Germany. There are now 600,000 e-commerce shops around the world. But maybe Shopify still doesn't quite fit your ideas. Time to look around for some great Shopify alternatives.

Nevertheless, let's take a quick look at the advantages and disadvantages of the platform before we start. If you'd like even more specifics, check out our full Shopify review here.

Benefits of ShopifyCons of Shopify
  • user friendliness: Shopify is one of the easiest tools I have ever tested for creating an ecommerce site, despite the incredible number of features.
  • Apps & Community: Can't find what you need? There are apps for that. The Shopify App Store is packed with free and paid solutions so that you can equip your shop with additional functions such as live chat or digital products.
  • Template selection: There are over 170 professionally designed templates on offer (including a few free themes). You can even create your own design using the Liquid programming language.
  • Support: A team is available around the clock; thus the support is better than with the Shopify competitors WooCommerce or Magento.
  • Transaction fees: Additional transaction fees for sellers if Shopify Payments is not used for credit card payments.
  • Create regular content: Great for product pages, but not so great for blogs. While there are a few options, Shopify is primarily focused on the shop. This can be frustrating even for seasoned webmasters.
  • Create multilingual shops: In order to operate your Shopify online shop in more than one language, it does not require a very easy set-up and it is also not cheap. The easiest way would be to use this (expensive) app.
  • SEO at Shopify: Unfortunately, with Shopify you have to accept a few SEO problems (e.g. fixed URL structures) that some may find annoying.
  • Currently you can only pay in US dollars (but you can run the shop in any currency).

Now that we've revisited these aspects, we can start with Shopify's biggest competitors.

The best Shopify alternatives

Not exactly an all-in-one platform, because You need to install WordPress (and also know a lot about it). Nevertheless, as a simple plugin, WooCommerce offers a surprising number of functions.

And the coolest thing about it is that you can call it serious e-commerce solution can use without spending a lot of money every month. Although it's a little more complicated than that - as you'll see in the video and the pros and cons below.

You can find detailed information about WooCommerce in our test report: In ... WooCommerce Test - How does the WordPress shop work? 2017-03-09T16: 17: 34.000Zhttps: //

WooCommerce prices:

WooCommerce is basically free. But because it's not a platform you still need a certain budget for hosting your shop. On average it could look something like this:

  • Hosting: between 5 - 25 € / month
  • domain: around 10 € / year
  • Premium theme: one-time fee of approx. 55 €
  • FurtherPlugins: 40 - 80 € / year per plugin

But most of all you pay for the whole Time it takes for everything to run smoothly.

  • Individually expandable: You can add many more plugins and make the shop a powerful solution.
  • Great segmentation options: For customer logins and administrator accounts.
  • Choice of templates: Not only do you find loads of free themes and premium designs online, you can also customize them according to your wishes (usually via the program code).
  • Legal certainty: extra plugins such as WooCommerce Germanized or German Market are necessary for the legal adjustment.
  • Complexity: Setting up WooCommerce is not easy for beginners.
  • No official support: Just like with WordPress, you are left to your own devices with technical problems. On the flip side, WordPress is so popular as a platform that there are thousands of skilled developers you can hire.

Why rather WooCommerce than Shopify?

If you WordPress already know, understand and love, then WooCommerce is a very strong competitor. The provider could also be interesting in terms of price, provided you want a simple solution and not the budget, but you have the time to tinker with your side.

Wix is consistently number one among our favorite website builders, but can it keep up with e-commerce? Yes and no. The positive side is that the Operation just as easy is like the construction kit and you also get good design options and access to the fantastic app market.

However, the e-commerce part of Wix came later. Some features are missing (e.g., feature import and export), which should make it difficult to compete with Shopify, as you can see below.

Wix pricing:

  • Business Basic: $ 23 with all e-commerce features, up to 20 GB of storage
  • Business Unlimited: $ 27 up to 35 GB of storage and up to 10 hours for videos
  • Business VIP: $ 49, up to 50 GB of storage and VIP support

  • Price-performance: You get a lot for your money here.
  • User friendliness: As with the website builder, it is easy, quick and convenient to use.
  • Customer logins: In contrast to its main competitor Weebly, Wix offers the package as a free add-on (in the app market).
  • No additional transaction fees: None of the online shop tariffs.
  • Options for personalization are missing: For example, we would like to have more control over confirmation emails.
  • Features restricted to USA: The real-time shipping option is only available in the US area.

Why would you prefer Wix to Shopify?

Already have a Wix website? Then you probably know the interface and philosophy of the designs, so it should be a piece of cake to create your shop with it. Wix is also a great alternative if you're looking for value for money.

The Hamburg company has more than 200,000 online shop operators. Although Jimdo is primarily known as a website builder, it also appears that the tool is popular among those looking to build an online store. My guess would be that that's more of the free offer is because of the great functions.

Still, Jimdo is one good option for beginnerswho are looking for a simple, quick and efficient solution. At least if you want to sell physical products - more on that in the disadvantages below.

There is now a new version called Jimdo Dolphin, but it is currently more limited than Jimdo Creator.

An even more detailed test report is available here: Jimdo Online ... Jimdo Online Shop Test: good enough for real business? 2013-10-28T15 : 52: 40.000Zhttps: //

Jimdo Creator prices:

  • Free: $ 0 Sale of a maximum of 5 products.
  • Per: $ 10 SEO options available and sales of up to 15 products.
  • Business: $ 20 Unlimited Product Sales.

  • user friendliness: Jimdo is just as easy to use as the construction kit.
  • Great price: You could even sell for free!
  • No transaction fees: At least not directly from Jimdo.
  • Cannot sell digital or service products: Physical products only.
  • No product import or export: So don't even think about moving stores manually.
  • Important e-commerce functions are missing: For example a shipping cost calculation, user reviews or customer logins.

Why would you prefer Jimdo to Shopify?

To be honest, they both play not really in the same league. The only reasons to choose Jimdo over Shopify are the low price and the support in German.

There are several reasons you might have heard of Magento. It was only bought by eBay in 2011. Then it was sold to Adobe in mid-2018. If you want to keep track of what is happening to the platform, all of these changes in ownership may be a little worrying. As things stand today, however, it is a CMS platform that focuses on the sale of products and is used as a Open source ecosystem is constructed.

It's a little difficult to gauge what exactly to expect from Magento, but the system definitely shines up too better known shops to be aligned; In the following, we will talk about the price and the reasons why you choose this tool and not Shopify.

Magento prices

It's a bit like WooCommerce. The CMS software is free, but you have to pay for hosting, plugins, and themes, among other things. Also, Magento demands more in terms of server requirements. The provider also provides a cloud-based platform, but is somewhat concealed about the costs.

Why would you prefer Magento to Shopify?

As mentioned earlier, it's hard to tell at this point. Adobe doesn't have the best past when it comes to sticking with its purchased products. If you are an established B2B or B2C company, it is probably worth reaching out to their advisors directly. If you have also been working with the Adobe Cloud for a long time, it makes sense to opt for Magento.

PrestaShop was founded in France in 2007 and is now also very popular in Italy and Spain. Over 250,000 shops there use the PHP-based one Open source platform. It can be assumed that the number of PrestaShops will also increase in Germany.

Fortunately, unlike other open source services like WooCommerce, in addition to the community forums and sources (which are also pretty good), PrestaShop also offers paid personal support.

Prices from PrestaShop:

100% free. At least on paper, because just like with WooCommerce or Magento, you have to put down some money at least for hosting, themes and plugins.

Why would you prefer PrestaShop to Shopify?

Its forum and resources are well worth browsing to see how easy it is to find information. Independently managing open source platforms can be a little tricky because you need a little technical know-how. So if you like the community, that's a good base.

Squarespace creates cool, chic, beautiful websites. But is that enough reason to choose this tool to create your online shop? After all, the provider didn't really plan to become a well-known e-commerce platform in the beginning, as it took Squarespace almost 10 years to incorporate this option.

Still, there may be a few benefits to selling your products on Squarespace, as shown in the table below.

Squarespace Pricing:

  • Business: $ 18 for small shops and with a 3% transaction fee.
  • E-commerce Base: $ 26 No transaction fees.
  • E-Commerce Extended: $ 40 With additional e-commerce features like real-time vendor shipping.

  • Good blog: You benefit from a powerful blogging function, and the integration also works smoothly.
  • Express check-out: For quick and frequent sales.
  • Sale of services: Not just physical or digital products.
  • Not good SEO: Squarespace doesn't let you edit SEO product information. These are part of your product description.
  • Not the easiest to use: Especially compared to Wix, Jimdo or Weebly.

Why would you prefer Squarespace to Shopify?

It's a good solution if your goal is to have a nice site with a decent blog. The tool is a little cheaper than Shopify, but not by much. Ultimately, it's more about whether you like the clean, minimalist look of Squarespace.

As we have already written in our full test report on the Weebly website builder: You can imagine using the platform as if you came into someone else's kitchen and immediately found everything to cook with. That's how intuitive the solution is.

This user-friendliness can also be found in the area of e-commerce. It is Super lightTo add and edit products, but there is a valid reason why we would only recommend Weebly for "smaller" online shops. Compared to platforms geared towards ecommerce, Weebly is sometimes lacking in features, as you will see in the video or in the pros and cons below.

Detailed information about the Weebly online shop: Here you can get started right away: ... Weebly Shop test report: Selling made easy? 2016-02-23T17: 48 : 08.000Zhttps: //

Weebly Pricing:

  • Per: $ 12 Sale of 25 products, with a 3% transaction fee.
  • Business: $ 25 Unlimited product sales, no fee or tax, and various shipping options.
  • Business Plus: $ 26 Includes all business features plus advanced e-commerce functions (e.g. automated shipping costs)

  • User friendliness: Again, Weebly is hard to beat for absolute beginners.
  • Integrated SSL security: Some platforms like to charge an extra fee for good protection, but Weebly doesn't.
  • No customer login: Not so great if you want to get a better picture of your buyers.
  • Not expandable: The missing functions for larger shops can become a problem as your business grows over time.

Why prefer Weebly to Shopify?

If You value simplicity most, then Weebly is the near perfect solution. The platform also offers great blogging and a page editor, so if you are planning on future non-ecommerce content and want an online store as a bonus, Weebly is fantastic.

Ecwid should not be confused with a standalone e-commerce platform, because this is actually a clever plugin that can be added to any websiteto integrate a shop. Just like with WooCommerce, there is a free option (not open source), but the biggest benefit is that you don't need a WordPress site. It works with every provider.

The best part is that Ecwid Surprisingly easy to use. I like that with Ecwid you can turn practically any website into a fully functional online shop and at a reasonable price. First of all: the following providers have their core market in the USA.This means that there is usually no German-speaking support and legal requirements are only partially or not at all met. Unfortunately we cannot check this, but we still do not want to withhold it from you:

They say everything is bigger in Texas (where BigCommerce is from). As for the number of functions, this statement is definitely true. The solution offers significantly more possible product variants than Shopify, functions for aborted shopping processes, an unbelievable number of payment methods, etc. Basically, you have all means to to create huge online stores, at least it looks like it.

But could it mean “overkill” for your requirements? Or is the solution too complicated to get started with? Find out more about this in the video below or read the advantages and disadvantages of BigCommerce directly below.

You can try Bigcommerce here: Read our detailed review about Bigcommerce here: ... Bigcommerce Review: Let's explore this online store builder2015-09-29T11: 17: 53.000Zhttps : //

BigCommerce pricing

  • default: $ 29.95 / month - Sell unlimited products.
  • plus: $ 79.95 / month - Includes cart recovery for abandoned purchases.
  • Per: $ 249.95 / month - Here you can integrate Google ratings and product filters.
  • Enterprise: Individual offer. A BigCommerce marketer will help you out with your shop.

An important clue: The tariffs at BigCommerce are limited in annual sales. If your annual sales exceed a certain number, you'll need to switch to a higher plan.

  • Up to 600 product variants: That makes Shopify seem pretty puny with its 100 variants. Of course, you can use one of the Shopify apps, but honestly that's not a very nice solution.
  • No transaction fees: What you achieve is yours too!
  • Excellent SEO: Probably one of the best alternatives to improve your search engine ranking.
  • Limited sales: Make sure you stay within your corresponding sales volume, otherwise BigCommerce will place you one price level higher. Shopify won't do that.
  • Not good for regular content: Even creating an “About Us” page is not as easy as it should be.
  • Not multilingualShop: Unless you'd like to program it yourself.

Why would you prefer BigCommerce to Shopify?

As you can see for yourself, there are a few similar drawbacks to both solutions. In my opinion, the most important reason to choose BigCommerce over Shopify is the way you manage your products, especially for very large shops. In addition, there are no additional transaction fees. In any case, it is worth trying to get an insight into how to deal with product variants and listings.

Volusion, another Texas company, is now almost 20 years old, and the number of sales it claims to have made would put it at the top of all contenders: $ 28 billion.

One would expect this impressive number to come from the ease of use of the platform. As you will see below in the pros and cons (or in the video), this is not one of the strengths of Volusion. Still, let's take a look at what sets this system apart from the rest.
