Information about "Meile"

The length of the mile is very common in the Anglo-American region, but does not belong to the international system of units SI (Système international d'unités).

Historically, the term mile originated in the Roman Empire as a sequence of 1,000 double steps, i.e. mille passus (thousand steps).

A distinction is now made between the land mile described here and the nautical mile known from nautical science. 1 mile is 1.609344 kilometers or 1 kilometer is 0.62137 miles.

The foot was widely used as a measure of length or unit of length very early on and is still used today in Anglo-American countries. However, it does not belong to the international system of units SI (Système international d'unités).

The foot usually corresponded to a length of 28-32 cm in the individual countries. In the meantime only the English foot is used. 1 foot corresponds to 30.48 centimeters or 1 foot corresponds to 12 inches / inch.
