The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) of The Economist magazine publishes a ranking of the quality of life in the world's largest cities every year. Australia's two largest cities - Sydney and Melbourne - made it into the top 3 in 2019 and Adelaide came in 10th on the rankings. With this, Australia dominates the top of the list. Travelers wishing to visit these cities must apply for an Australia visa prior to departure. You can do this online using the digital application form on this website.

Global Liveability Index - British study of the world's most liveable cities

According to the annual ranking list of the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the Global Liveablility Index, Vienna is the most liveable city in the world. Australia's two largest cities - Melbourne and Sydney - ranked 2nd and 3rd in 2019, and Adelaide came 10th on the rankings. To compile the ranking, the quality of life in 140 cities around the world is compared and assessed. Each city is assigned a specific number of points, which is used to determine its place in the ranking. The index takes into account more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors from the following categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. The stability category includes, for example, the number of violent crimes, the level of terrorist threat and the level of social unrest. Culture and the environment include the level of corruption, the range of sporting and cultural activities, temperature and humidity. Infrastructure includes the quality of public transport, the road network, water and energy supply and telecommunications.

A number of points is awarded for each individual factor, which leads to a theoretically possible maximum number of 100 points. Cities that score well on all factors will end up at the top of the list, while cities that score well in just a few areas will end up lower down the list.

Australian cities do above average

Australia scores best as a country in the Global Liveability Index. In 2019, no fewer than three Australian cities made it into the top 10 of the ranking, two of them even in the top three. After Vienna, Melbourne was rated as the second most liveable city, followed by Sydney in third place. Adelaide was tenth in the ranking. In 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Australian city of Perth was also in the top 10 and Melbourne was in first place between 2015 and 2018. In 2019, Melbourne scored a total of 98.4 out of 100, while Sydney scored 98.1 and Adelaide 96.6. Melbourne and Sydney both scored the full 100 in the Health Care, Education and Infrastructure categories.

It can be seen from this that Australian cities offer good living conditions for their residents, but also for travelers who visit these cities. Tourists and business travelers traveling to Australia can count on quality health care, a good road network, adequate public transport and a good quality of living. People who travel to Australia for their education can also count on high quality educational institutions.

Apply for a visa to Australia

If you want to visit Australia's livable cities, you will need to apply for a visa before you leave. For a vacation, visiting friends or family, doing voluntary work, a business trip or studying in Australia, the eVisitor visa is sufficient in most cases. One of the requirements for applying for and issuing an eVisitor visa for Australia is that the traveler is not employed by an employer in Australia and that he / she does not receive any salary or other compensation from an Australian organization for his / her activities. However, with an e-Visa you can go on a business trip, e.g. B. To visit a trade fair or conference or to meet or negotiate with (potential) business partners. Another requirement is that the passport used to apply for the visa must be valid for at least six months upon arrival in Australia.

The Australia visa is valid for one year and can be used for multiple trips. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to 3 consecutive months. This gives you plenty of time to visit both Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.
