Why should I stop smoking cigars?

Should I stop smoking ...

28.02.2018 - ... or do you prefer to wait? If you read the question like this, the “correct” answer seems to be obvious: every cigarette is harmful to health and over time the dependence on tobacco tends to increase rather than decrease. So everything speaks in favor of putting out the last cigarette as soon as possible and starting a smoke-free life.

And yet, many smokers decide to “put off smoking cessation on the back burner”, following the motto “Something speaks against it and the right time will certainly come”. Even if there are actually favorable and less favorable phases for quitting tobacco: Some people repeatedly postpone their stopping time in this way and thus remain long-term smokers.

Today we are addressing precisely those who - although they want to - cannot bring themselves to quit smoking with a small but (often) effective thought exercise. Simply ask yourself the following two questions:

1. If you decided now not to change your smoking habits, what do you think your life would be like in five or ten years?

2. If you decided to quit smoking in the next two weeks, what do you think your life would be like in five or ten years?

Take some time and answer both questions in writing. Or discuss it with a smoke-free controller, for example.

For example, ask yourself the following:

  • If you keep smoking for five or ten years, how much money will you have spent on smoking?
  • What effects can you imagine for your appearance, for example your skin?
  • Or for your fitness?
  • What does your decision mean for your risk of having a stroke, a heart attack, or developing cancer?
  • How will your general quality of life change if you continue to smoke - or if you quit?

Realize that your decision in the present will have a huge impact on your health in the future - comparable to a savings plan in which you regularly set aside something in order to benefit from it at some point in the future.

Easier said than done, some will now think. And that's right: the conscious decision to quit smoking is an important prerequisite for the project to succeed in leading a life as a non-smoker from now on.

In addition, many people benefit from the help and support of others. The smoke-free campaign supports you in quitting smoking, more information can be found under Quitting.
