Inbox relevant to Outlook

Focused Inbox separates your inbox into two tabs - Focused and Other. Your most important email messages are on the Focused tab, while the rest of the messages are easily accessible - but no longer gone - on the Other tab.

Hints:

  • In Outlook for Windows, inbox focus is only for Microsoft 365 accounts , Exchange and Outlook.com available.

  • If you don't see Focused and Other in your mailbox, you might have a Clutter folder instead. For more information, see Use Clutter to Sort Low Priority Messages in Outlook.

  • Inbox REST API provides Microsoft 365 and mailbox messaging training to help users sort their email efficiently. However, this API is supported for the Microsoft 365 shared mailbox. Outlook for Windows currently displays notices for "Inbox Focused" for shared mailboxes. This is unexpected behavior. Microsoft is aware of the problem and this article will be updated as the changes are completed.

frequently asked Questions

Why is the relevant inbox not displayed in my Outlook?

For the latest information on Focused Inbox availability, see our blog post.

How does the Relevant Inbox work with the Clutter feature?

Focused Inbox replaces clutter. After switching, you will no longer receive any less important emails in the "Clutter" folder. Instead, emails are split between the "Focused" and "Other" tabs in your inbox. The same algorithm that was used to move items to the Clutter folder now supports the inbox with focus; that is, all email messages that were set to move to Clutter are now moved to Other. Any messages already in your Clutter folder will remain there until you decide to delete or move them.

Can I still use the Clutter feature instead of the Relevant Inbox?

For now, you can still use Clutter. In the long term, however, the "clutter" function will be replaced by the relevant inbox.

Can I also try the Relevant Inbox if I have deactivated "Clutter"?

Yes. You can activate the Relevant Inbox as described in the instructions above.

With the relevant inbox, will all emails be organized in the inbox as soon as I activate this feature?

Yes. Once you've turned on the main focus inbox, you'll see the Focused and Other tabs at the top of the inbox. Using Focused Inbox will make the way your messages are organized smarter. You can also give them Outlook, which is most important to you, by moving emails between Focused and Other and setting overrides to ensure that emails from specific senders always appear in a specific destination.

I'm already using the Relevant Inbox in Outlook for iOS or Android. Will something change for me?

Nothing changes in Outlook for iOS or Android. Because your Outlook desktop and web apps are updated to incorporate Relevant Inbox, the content of the Relevant and Other tabs is the same on all Outlook clients.

Focused Inbox is turned on, but after selecting "Move to Focused", "Always to" Focused, "Switch to Others", or "Always Switch to Others" in a message, the messages will not move.

If you're using a shared mailbox, the inbox with focus won't work. This is by design.
