  • The share of counterfeit goods in world trade rose by 0.8 percentage points to 3.3 percent between 2013 and 2016. This is the result of a study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
  • Counterfeit and illegally manufactured goods worth a good 460 billion euros are traded around the world.
  • In the European Union alone, the proportion of imported counterfeits is almost seven percent.

The forgeries came from practically every country in the world. However, according to the experts, China and Hong Kong are still the largest countries of origin.

Most affected by product piracy are companies that are primarily based in OECD countries such as the USA, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain, Japan or Korea.

Everyday consumer goods in particular are affected by counterfeiting - such as shoes, cosmetics and toys. But counterfeit goods can also be found in spare parts, batteries and luxury items.

Customs face major challenges

The trade in counterfeit products is very dynamic. "Counterfeiters are aggressively looking for new profit opportunities," says the OECD report. It can be observed that criminals have recently been concentrating on counterfeit guitars and building materials, for example.

The experts are observing another trend: the proportion of small shipments seems to be increasing. If only small packages are sent, there is less chance that they will be discovered. This poses major challenges for customs in particular.

The report also shows: The rate of customs clearance is low overall. This is also due to the fact that the authorities have different priorities. These included combating the arms trade and curbing illegal money transfers.

  • Commentary from Peter Imber (waterfall)
The Chlnesians fout any international rules. The Chinese government even secretly supports and protects the distribution of counterfeit products in order to be able to derive economic advantages for the country. This also fits in with human rights violations of the worst kind in employment relationships. If someone complains about it, they'll be locked away. But we in the West allow all of this because every country wants to benefit as much as possible from the large market.

We delivered the technologies to China on a silver platter. In the usual arrogant, arrogant, in other words: Western manner, we thought that they weren't able to think about things, to make connections. They can only work 13 hours a day for our consumption, nothing else. And now we "suffer"? Ouch ...
