What are foreign exchange reserves in India

India's foreign exchange reserves measure the foreign currency denominations stored and controlled by the Reserve Bank of India, which the bank can use to implement monetary policy, finance external debt, conduct monetary interventions to influence the national exchange rate, and for other purposes. These are financial assets. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) publishes data on currency reserves on a weekly basis.

In addition to the total reserves denominated in local currency and the US dollar, the Reserve Bank of India publishes data on its individual components: foreign exchange reserves, monetary gold, special drawing rights and the reserve position of the IMF.

The influence of this indicator on the rates of the Indian rupee depends on accompanying factors. The accumulation of reserves has its price. However, foreign exchange reserves are important for foreign trade and related payments. In addition, they contribute to the orderly development of the Indian currency market. In general, the growth of foreign exchange reserves can serve as a measure to prop up or put pressure on the rupee, depending on the RBI's specific inflation targets.
