HSL begins new building project in Duisburg

At the beginning of November, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the new building project by Haeger & Schmidt Logistics (HSL) took place on the steel island in Duisburg harbor. It consists of a warehouse and an office and social building.

The warehouse is being built on the Nordhafen operating section, while a new office and social building is being built on the additionally leased part of the terminal. The new buildings should be ready for occupancy in the second half of 2021.

With the expansion of the steel island into a multifunctional hub in Duisburg, HSL ensures growth and secures its services. By expanding the site by 7,200 m², which is used, among other things, for a new truck yard, the total area of the steel island was increased to 58,000 m². Part of the open storage and handling areas will now be used for the construction of a new 9,000 m² heated hall with the dimensions 210 × 45 m, the hook height in the new hall will be 9 m and a 40 t crane will work.

The hall is equipped with two half-train tracks of 210 m each, which can be driven over by truck. There is a weather-protected connection to the existing hall in order to ensure trimodality in the new hall with a storage capacity of 60,000 t. The building is temperature-controlled with an innovative, resource-saving process using underfloor heating. An underground truck yard is also being built in the hall to enable quick transshipment and quick stuffing and stripping of general cargo containers. A self-handling counter for trucks is to be built at the administration building that is being built at the same time, the new administration building with 420 m² of floor space contains social rooms for industrial employees, waiting rooms for truck drivers and offices for twelve additional employees.

»The changing customer requirements and the expansion of our current storage capacities were decisive for this further investment at the Duisburg location. An additional aspect for us is that we can offer trimodal solutions with the new building in the region around Duisburg. Planning and construction are in the trusted hands of duisport, completion is planned for 2021, "said Heiko Brückner, saying it was one of the largest investments since Haeger & Schmidt was founded.

HSL commissioned duisport consult, a subsidiary of Duisburger Hafen AG, with the planning and implementation of the project.

»After long discussions and a wide variety of designs, we were finally able to develop a future-oriented concept with our customer HSL for this hall, which is specially designed for the trimodal warehouse logistics of high-quality steel products. We are delighted that Haeger & Schmidt has once again placed their trust in us to support them not only with the planning, but also with the turnkey construction of the real estate, ”says Thomas Schlipköther, CEO of dpc and colleague on the board of Markus Bangen duisport.
