The lambda calculus is a formal system that (like the propositional logic in Section 2.1) can be syntactically built up from a few building blocks and formation rules. These building blocks are special terms that represent functions on two levels: on the one hand, the level of function definition and, on the other hand, the level of function application. In most areas of mathematics, there is no special distinction between these levels: sometimes it is only necessary to decide from the context whether ex is meant to be the exponential function or the real number that results from the application of the exponential function to x.
