Hard times for glass.
The Ceramic Shield can withstand more than any smartphone glass
The iPhone already had the toughest glass in a smartphone. To make the iPhone 12 Pro even more robust, we needed a completely new material.
Welcome to the Ceramic Shield. It is made with nanoceramic crystals in the glass - which are even harder than most metals. That sounds easy, but it's incredibly difficult because most ceramics aren't transparent. With a very specific type of crystal and degree of crystallinity, we have developed a unique formula that makes the ceramic even harder, but remains transparent. That was exactly the innovation that made Ceramic Shield the ideal material for the display. It is used for the first time in a smartphone and is harder than any smartphone glass.
Ion exchange process
Hard is good, but we also wanted to protect the display from scratches. That is why we use our double ion exchange process as with the glass on the back and protect the display from cracks, scratches and wear and tear.
In addition to the Ceramic Shield, there is one more thing that makes the front more robust - the display extends to the edge of the iPhone, protecting it even more. All of this makes the iPhone 4x better drop resistance. That's the biggest year-over-year improvement the iPhone has ever seen.

Ultra-fast cellular communications
Say hello to 5G.
5G makes cellular communications on the iPhone faster and improves performance in congested networks.4 Now you can load huge files on the go or stream HDR films in the highest video quality. Without. Annoying. Delay. In addition, the iPhone has more 5G bands than any other smartphone. So you can get 5G in more places. And this speed brings incredible possibilities for the future of apps.
The iPhone uses
There is 5G.
And 5G on the iPhone.
Not only did we want to bring 5G to the iPhone 12 Pro, we also wanted to deliver the best 5G experience without compromising. So we had to do some things differently.
Developing the iPhone for 5G
We have developed special antennas and radio components with high sensitivity and incredible efficiency. Then we gave the iPhone 12 Pro the most 5G bands in a smartphone so you can get 5G in more places.
We have also optimized our entire software stack - from apps to frameworks at the system level - to take full advantage of 5G. For example, many apps will use 5G without using more energy.
Less energy consumption with the Smart Data mode
5G on the iPhone is not only faster but also smarter. If your iPhone does not need 5G speeds - for example when it is updating in the background - it automatically uses LTE and thus conserves the battery. And when you need speed - like loading a season of your favorite series - the iPhone 12 Pro switches to 5G. Of course, you can also choose to use 5G whenever it's available.
We have worked intensively with mobile network providers and carried out tests to improve 5G networks. We've seen real improvements in speed since then, but call quality, energy consumption, and global coverage have also improved. This is how 5G works with the iPhone.
Only a chip comes close to him. Our last.
As the first 5 nanometer chip in the industry, the A14 Bionic comes with powerful, atom-small components. 40 percent more transistors ensure acceleration and, at the same time, more efficiency in terms of battery life. And a new ISP supports Dolby Vision recordings - something that not even a professional film camera can do, especially not other smartphones.
Generations ahead of any other smartphone chip
The fastest smartphone chip ever. Once again.
The new possibilities of the iPhone 12 Pro need speed. A lot. One way to make a chip faster is with more transistors. That means either the chip has to get bigger or the transistors have to get smaller.
We chose smaller. The iPhone 12 has the industry's first 5 nanometer chip. The components are measured in atoms, so the transistors can be packed incredibly tightly together. This allows energy to flow between them faster - and at the same time, less is lost. In this way, the A14 Bionic increases its performance and saves energy.
16 ‑ core
11 trillion arithmetic operations per second
We have doubled the cores from 8 to 16 and thus significantly improved the performance of our neural engine. This makes computationally intensive machine learning tasks - like improving details in your photos with Deep Fusion - up to 80% faster. We also made the special machine learning accelerators on our CPU 70% faster so apps can take advantage of this improved performance across our chip.
Image signal processor
4K HDR recording with Dolby Vision
And what does that mean for you? A lot. Significantly more performance in all areas. Smart HDR 3 for more lifelike photos. Improved details in high quality videos thanks to advanced temporal noise reduction on the new image signal processor. And Dolby Vision, which is encoded when recording - not only from professional computers at the editing suite. There's never been something like the A14 Bionic Chip, and we're excited to see what you'll do with it.
AR at the speed of light.

A depth map in nanoseconds
AR at the speed of light.
The iPhone was already designed from the ground up for AR, and now the LiDAR scanner in the iPhone 12 Pro takes things to a whole new level.
More data for
A detailed depth map in nanoseconds
The LiDAR scanner measures how long the invisible light rays need from the transmitter to the objects and back to the receiver, and thus calculates the absolute depth. With the depth frameworks of iOS 14, LiDAR generates an infinite amount of high-resolution data from the entire field of view of the camera. And while the rays pulsate every nanosecond, they constantly measure the scene and refine the depth map. That changes everything for AR.
LiDAR can immediately capture the surfaces in your environment. In this way, AR apps can analyze the scenery directly and enable individual experiences.
With a detailed representation of all surfaces in a room, LiDAR can place content wherever it belongs so that it looks realistic - whether on the edge of the sofa, the back of the chair or the chaotic desk. This makes AR apps much smarter. For example, if a landscape is projected onto your living room, the grass only grows on the floor up to your furniture and adapts completely to the surroundings.
Thanks to a more precise depth map, your iPhone 12 Pro also knows which objects are in front of others. When AR figures walk through your driveway, they will now come through right behind your car and in front of the tree, so the experience is even more realistic.

Night mode portraits
LiDAR also offers advanced options for the Pro camera system, such as 6x faster autofocus in low light. And on the wide-angle lens, the detailed LiDAR depth map enables night mode portraits. Now the Neural Engine can render your subject in focus in front of an impressively blurred background, even in low light.
Per camera system
This is what other smartphones dream of at night.
Night mode is available for ultra-wide and wide-angle cameras, and it takes better pictures than ever in extremely low light. LiDAR enables night mode portraits. And the wide-angle lens lets in 27 percent more light, for more details and a sharper focus day and night.
Wide-angle lens with ƒ1.6 aperture captures 27% more light
New wide-angle lens with 7 elements for edge-to-edge sharpness
New OIS makes 5000 adjustments per second
LiDAR enables up to 6x faster autofocus in low light
12 per max.
The larger iPhone gets the most out of the Pro camera system. A 47 percent larger sensor and larger pixels ensure that the wide-angle lens captures significantly more light. A new OIS stabilizes the sensor and not the lens. This keeps your recordings stable even when you move. And with the new 65 mm telephoto lens you can zoom in even closer into portraits.
Low light photos
New optical image stabilization with sensor shift
Stay calm, even in moving moments.
Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) on the iPhone 12 Pro now makes adjustments to the wide-angle lens 5000 times per second - five times faster than the iPhone 11 Pro. With this great performance, photos stay sharp and videos stay calm. But to stabilize the iPhone 12 Pro Max wide-angle lens, we had to come up with something completely different.
We gave the iPhone 12 Pro Max a larger, wide-angle sensor with larger pixels to capture more light. This creates more details and colors in your photos. And we have developed a solution for stabilization that only moves the sensor and provides even more stability. That's OIS with sensor displacement - and it makes a huge difference.
for the iPhone
Until now, image stabilization with sensor shifting was only known from single-lens reflex cameras. It's the first time it's been customized for the iPhone. Whether you're taking a video of your kids romping with them in the park, or holding your iPhone out of the window on a bumpy road, stabilization is more accurate than ever.
like the night.
Night mode portraits on the wide-angle lens have vivid colors and impressive bokeh to add accents with illuminated buildings, street lamps and other lights in the background.
Even with a single small light source, LiDAR and our A14 Bionic can render all patterns and structures in the foreground and realistic colors throughout the room.
Deep Fusion is used in scenes with medium light. The Neural Engine analyzes multiple exposures pixel by pixel and highlights details in the magnifying glass, the woman and the wall like never before.
The thought behind Deep Fusion.
It's easy to get sharp, clear details when shooting in light. It gets more difficult in medium to low light, for example when you take pictures of landscapes in the early morning or of a candlelit dinner. Then Deep Fusion comes in to render the details you need to make a great shot.
As with HDR photos, when you take a photo, your camera will first take a series of pictures with different exposures. For an HDR image, these images are then combined to find the best exposure for your subject, add detail in highlights and shadows, and reduce overall image noise.
Millions of pixels
Deep Fusion on the iPhone 12 Pro goes beyond HDR and runs every pixel of these multi-exposed images through the A14 Bionic's neural engine. The Neural Engine selects the best part of each pixel for the best results in terms of sharpness, color, highlights, and shadows. The Neural Engine then combines these pixels into a detailed final photo.
No other smartphone has Deep Fusion - and the incredible speed of the A14 Bionic makes Deep Fusion better and faster than ever. This year we're bringing it to every camera, including the TrueDepth front camera. No matter what you record, you will see an incredible amount of detail in your final recording.
