The LiDAR scanner measures how long the invisible light rays need from the transmitter to the objects and back to the receiver, and thus calculates the absolute depth. With the depth frameworks of iOS 14, LiDAR generates an infinite amount of high-resolution data from the entire field of view of the camera. And while the rays pulsate every nanosecond, they constantly measure the scene and refine the depth map. That changes everything for AR.

LiDAR can immediately capture the surfaces in your environment. In this way, AR apps can analyze the scenery directly and enable individual experiences.

With a detailed representation of all surfaces in a room, LiDAR can place content wherever it belongs so that it looks realistic - whether on the edge of the sofa, the back of the chair or the chaotic desk. This makes AR apps much smarter. For example, if a landscape is projected onto your living room, the grass only grows on the floor up to your furniture and adapts completely to the surroundings.

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) on the iPhone 12 Pro now makes adjustments to the wide-angle lens 5000 times per second - five times faster than the iPhone 11 Pro. We gave the iPhone 12 Pro Max a larger, wide-angle sensor with larger pixels to capture more light. This creates more details and colors in your photos.
