Welcome to the website of the Federal Foreign Office

The representations can be described as “eyes, ears and voice” of Germany abroad. Based on instructions from the Foreign Office, they represent our state, protect its interests and protect its citizens in the host country. You negotiate with the local government and promote political relations and economic, cultural and scientific cooperation.

The main tasks of the representations are

  • To obtain information
  • to report on matters of importance to the various federal and state government agencies,
  • to help German citizens who are in need,
    To provide crisis prevention and to take on official and notarial functions for Germans living abroad,
  • Issuing visas for trips to Germany
  • to support German companies in their activities in the host country and generally to promote bilateral trade,
  • to promote cultural exchange,
  • to inform the public of the host country about our foreign policy, about Germany in general, its society and culture,
  • to prepare and accompany high-level visits from Germany.

Of the total of 228 German missions abroad are

  • 153 messages
  • 54 Consulates General
  • 7 consulates
  • 12 multilateral missions
  • a representative office

There are also 337 honorary honorary consuls general and honorary consuls.
