Quora has made a name for itself as a website that can actually help. The platform has 190 million users who will soon be able to ask for help in German too. There is only one thing Quora does not yet know exactly: How can you best earn money with questions and answers.

  • The question-and-answer portal Quora claims to have 190 million visitors a month.
  • Experts answer questions on the site; the users help with quality assurance.
  • A German and Italian edition are planned. A French and a Spanish version are already being tested.
  • After a long time without a business model, the site has been displaying advertisements to its users for a year.
  • Quora is valued at $ 1.8 billion and is still largely funded by venture capital.

Anyone who has ever looked for help online knows how unreliable the Internet can be in such cases. On sites like Gutefrage or Yahoo Clever (which is called Yahoo Answers in the English version), the really useful answers lie between a lot of half-knowledge and wild speculation like the proverbial needle hidden in a haystack.

In contrast to the above-mentioned pages, Quora (an artificial word that is supposed to remind you of “Quorum, link opens in a new window”) relies on expert knowledge and prefers to let proven experts answer questions from a wide variety of specialist areas. These include prominent names such as Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, Netflix boss Reed Hastings and venture capital guru Mar Andreessen. Political giants such as Hilary Clinton and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have already given information on Quora.

Users help with quality assurance

In contrast to an online encyclopedia like Wikipedia, Quora is not about mere facts, but about well-founded opinions and analyzes. The experts, whose name and subject area are shown in most of the answers, reflect their specific, personal point of view and do not have to remain as neutral as possible like the anonymous authors of Wikipedia.

As with Wikipedia, the end result is a joint effort: Registered Quora users can request additions and changes to all answers, which an author can then accept or reject. The users can also suggest answers for deletion that they find incorrect, misleading, or offensive.

Quora in German, French, Italian and Spanish

Quora claims to have over 190 million monthly users today - almost twice as many compared to the previous year. Around 40 percent of the visitors come from the USA. The second most come from India with a good 16 percent.

With the expansion into the German-speaking area, the distribution is likely to change soon. An exact start date is not yet known. In an interview, Link opens in a new window with the German technology website Wired.de, but Quora founder and boss Adam D'Angelo promises that it will be ready this summer. In addition, an Italian Quora site is to be launched soon. A Spanish and a French version are already being tested.

A value of $ 1.8 billion

Quora, which was launched in 2010, had no answer to one question for a long time: How to best earn money. It was only last year that the portal began to display advertisements to its users. Which advertisements someone gets to see depends on the respective question: When it comes to cars, it can be that of a car manufacturer - with the ulterior motive that someone who inquires about cars may soon want to buy one himself. The German pages should remain free of advertising in the first phase.

Because Quora is not a publicly traded company, it does not release any financial figures. It is therefore not clear how high the income from advertising is. However, one can assume that they do not yet cover the operating costs - even if all experts make their knowledge available on the site free of charge.

Quora is therefore still financing its business with venture capital, from which it has been able to raise 235 million dollars in various financing rounds, link opens in a new window. Investors are betting on an early IPO for the company, which is currently valued at $ 1.8 billion.

Algorithms help

In addition to the community, Quora also relies on algorithms for quality assurance. They help ensure that questions land to the experts who are best qualified and that answers are displayed to the users who are most interested. Algorithms are also used to evaluate the quality of the answers.
