What happens to your body and brain when you stop eating sugar

Sugar is found in many foods, but it's actually not good for us. Sure, you can enjoy sugar in moderation, but what actually happens to the body if you renounce the sweet drug altogether?

There's a reason it's so difficult to go without sugar. For one thing, it's delicious, but what few people know: Sugar also activates the opioid receptors in your brain, which stimulates your neurological reward system. In other words, sugar makes you feel emotionally comfortable, despite all the negative side effects of excessive consumption. These include headaches, lack of energy, and even hormonal imbalance.

However, it's important to note that processed sugars are different from the natural sugars found in fruits, honey, and unsweetened milk. Refined sugar, also known as sucrose, is made in large quantities from sugar cane and sugar beets, certified nutritionist Sara Siskind told INSIDER. They are high in calories and have no real nutritional value, while natural sugars contain vitamins and minerals.

Processed sugars taste good, but are not good for your body

Baked goods, lemonades and the supposedly "healthy" snacks that can be found on many desks are crammed full of sugar. The first bite or sip tastes quite good at first, of course, but let's be honest: do you feel particularly lively or energized afterwards when this piece of cake or the soft drink is in your stomach?

Grace Derocha, a registered nutritionist, certified diabetes expert and health trainer with the Blue Cross Blue Shield, a health insurance association in Michigan, told INSIDER that there are more than 50 different names and grades of processed sugar in food. And as we all know, while these taste good, they don't do you any good.

"The high glycemic index of processed sugars can quickly increase and then quickly drop blood sugar levels in the body," said Derocha. That leads to a kind of roller coaster effect. “When the blood sugar level rises, you experience a rapid increase in energy. Unfortunately, this surge is quickly regulated by the body, followed by an energy or sugar crash. According to the expert, the effect occurs particularly with added sugars.

In addition, the body uses enzymes in the small intestine to convert sugar into glucose. Typically this is not a problem as glucose is stored from carbohydrates as an energy source that the body can access when needed. However, according to Derocha, excess glucose is converted into fat, which can lead to weight gain and obesity if overdone.

What happens when you stop eating sugar?

As difficult as it may be to give up the habit of ordering the ice-cold cola with the main course or putting it in the candy platter at events, omitting sugar from your diet can have a significant impact on your health. If you regularly treat yourself to dessert and a cup of tea after dinner or if you eat an industrial muesli bar every day in addition to lunch, you can, according to Siskind, be prepared for a hard transition period.

"Studies have shown that sugar abstinence initially produces effects similar to drug withdrawal," she said. “This can lead to exhaustion, headaches, brain fog - also known as brain fog - and irritability. Some people even have gastrointestinal complaints. "

Sugar releases the feel-good hormones dopamine and serotonin in the brain and activates the body's reward system, Robert Glatter, assistant professor of emergency medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, told INSIDER. In other words, the more sugar you consume, the better you will feel - at least temporarily. So when you stop consuming sugar, your body goes through a real withdrawal. And that's not comfortable for your body and your brain.

"If you reduce your sugar intake, the body will feel it and you will likely feel moody or irritable, especially in the first few days," said Glatter.

Many people experience fatigue, headaches, or even sadness and depression, he added. All signs that the body is adapting to the now reduced glucose, dopamine and serotonin values. "After about a week the energy balance improves and you begin to feel more alive and less irritable."

High sugar consumption is a cause of bad skin

Reducing your sugar intake will do just the opposite.

"Leaving out sugar can help improve the complexion by strengthening elastin and collagen and reducing the level of inflammation in the skin," said Glatter.

Less sugar can improve the quality of sleep

Avoiding sugar does not solve existing sleep problems overnight, but you can get a deeper sleep within a few weeks, said Glatter. Because foods with a high content of refined sugar have a negative effect on deep sleep - also known as "Slow Wave Sleep" (SWS) - as well as on restful sleep, which consolidates memories and information from everyday life, and the "Rapid Eye Movement" -Phase (REM), also called dream phase.

Less sugar reduces the number of times you wake up at night and improves the overall quality of sleep.

Sugar reduction is only one factor in weight loss

To be clear, sugar alone does not make you gain weight. However, consuming excessive amounts can contribute to weight gain. Just as different factors play a role in gaining weight, so are different elements involved in weight loss. Reducing sugar is just one of those elements.

“As you reduce or eliminate sugar, your fat storage slowly decreases and you start to lose some weight. However, this takes time, and the effects typically begin in one to two weeks, ”Glatter told INSIDER.

According to Glatter, anyone who wants to lose a significant amount of weight quickly with a sugar reduction should make sure to consume more protein and do regular cardio and strength training.
