Camila Cabello honored as best artist

The Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello won the MTV EMAs in Bilbao - among others in the categories “Best Artist” and “Best Song”.

Bilbao - Camila Cabello was the big winner at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards. The 21-year-old prevailed against Ariane Grande, Drake, Dua Lipa and Post Malone in the important category Best Artist at the gala in Bilbao, Spain. Cabello's sensual hit “Havana” also won trophies for the best song and the best video. There was also a prize for her in the Best US Act category. Cabello accepted the trophies in a flowing red dress. Her friend Ariane Grande had five nominations, but ended up with nothing.

The mega show in the Bizkaia Arena clearly showed that Cabello's star is rising higher and higher in the pop sky. At the MTV Europe Music Awards in London 2017, she had won the prize for the best pop act. This year there were four trophies for the American with Cuban roots, who was discovered in the US edition of the music talent show X Factor and was a member of the band Fifth Harmony.

Rapper Nicki Minaj, who won in the categories Best Hip-Hop Act and Best Look, was one of the other winners of the evening. The Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer won the Best Rock category. Marshmello can call himself the best artist in the electronics division.

Cardi B. as the best newcomer

Best newcomer was rapper Cardi B. Panic! At the Disco was successful in the Best Alternative category - and lead singer Brendon Urie let fans know right away which place he intended for the trophy: "It will come in my bathroom," he announced succinctly. Singer Shawn Mendes won the award for best live performance, while singer-songwriter Dua Lipa triumphed in the category of best pop artist.

One of the highlights was the appearance of Janet Jackson, who was honored with the Global Icon Award for her four decades of life's work with eleven albums. She started her career as a child in a music-loving family from which the Jackson Five and finally pop legend Michael Jackson would emerge.

Janet Jackson gives emotional speech

Janet Jackson used her acceptance speech to appeal for commitment to women's rights. Her award comes with a responsibility, she explained. “Today I feel the urge to speak for those women whose voices have been silenced. I am one of those voices - women who have been gagged, literally and metaphorically speaking; Women who have been molested; Women who live in fear - I stand by you. Today I have the hope that a new world will emerge. Women, our voices need to be heard. "

Before her speech, Jackson had once again proven that she had not forgotten her dance steps even at the age of 52. Accompanied by African drummers and torchbearers, she performed a medley from her hits “Made for Now”, “All for You” and “Rhythm Nation”.

In general, the 25th edition of the music award ceremony impressed as usual with unusual costumes, choreographies, light plays and videos on a huge stage. The gala also included references to Bilbao's connections to the art world, which can be traced back to the famous Guggenheim Museum. Presenter Hailee Steinfeld started the evening with a video sketch that shows how she breaks into an art gallery to steal an MTV trophy. At the end of the clip, she stepped on stage in a thin silver dress. After several more costume changes, Steinfeld herself became a “work of art” in her own words when she was sprayed with blue and yellow paint in a long white dress.

The MTV Europe Music Awards are given in a different European city each year. Prize winners are chosen by fans across the continent via online voting.
