Should I trust my gut feeling

Intuition: How we learn to listen better to our gut instincts

How can you train intuition? 7 steps on how to learn to trust your intuition

In the course of modern life, intuition is increasingly lost. The fast paced lifestyle often forces us to act rationally rather than intuitively. And suddenly you notice again and again that you are not at all comfortable with your decisions, because something in you is resisting it.

In order to find the balance in your life again, you should connect with your inner voice and perceive your feelings. Because they show you the way that you actually want to go. With all the stress that we have on our ears every day, that's not that easy. So it takes a little training to be able to listen to yourself better again.

In these 7 steps you can learn to trust your own intuition:

1st step: calm down

First, you should know that stress can block your intuition. When you have a lot on your mind, your head makes all the decisions. Your inner voice, on the other hand, is completely drowned in all the hustle and bustle. Therefore, the first step for you is to calm down. This can be through meditation exercises, autogenic training, yoga or even short breathing exercises in which you focus entirely on yourself.

Even a walk or a relaxing bath will calm your mind and bring you one step closer to your intuition. It is best to plan your session of doing nothing daily or at least regularly. For a start, 10 minutes are enough, which you can gradually increase - and probably even want to.

Step 2: Practice your perception

During these rest phases you can gradually train your self-awareness. How do you feel? How does your body feel? Do you hear your inner voice that wants to say something to you very quietly? Then listen to her, even if she may be telling you something negative that your mind would like to suppress.

Because even negative thoughts such as envy, shame, greed or despair will help you advance in your decisions and are completely natural. These short impulses ensure that even well-considered decisions are suddenly made differently - and save you from making a mistake.

Step 3: Use your intuition in everyday life

If you gradually develop a feeling for your gut feeling again, then apply it in everyday life. A great exercise to get you started: do nothing for a whole day and just follow your inner voice. Does she tell you "go out"? Then go for a walk. However, do not go the usual round, but let your intuition determine whether you go right or left at the next corner, take the train for a while, take a break in a café and so on.

Perhaps you will meet nice people on the way or have other inspirations that have so far remained hidden from you. You can also try to “foresee” things intuitively: When the phone rings, guess who's on it. Or flip a coin and guess whether it's heads or tails.

4th step: Train your knowledge of human nature

Another way to train your intuition is to observe strangers. There are plenty of exercise objects to be found on a stroll through town or on the way to work. Take a close look at people and intuitively assess them. Do you seem likable? Or unsympathetic? Where could you go right now? Where coming from? What could their story be? This may sound a bit like Sherlock Holmes, but it is a great workout for reviving your hidden instincts.

Step 5: put away fears

Don't be afraid that if you listen to your gut instinct, you may make a mistake. On the one hand, your mind offers no guarantee that it will always make the right decisions; on the other hand, you can learn from mistakes. Mistakes are valuable. Because mostly they stay in the memory longer and cause a positive change.

In addition, no master has fallen from the sky yet. Even many discoveries have arisen from mishaps, major or minor. If Alexander Flemming hadn't forgotten to throw away used Petri dishes, penicillin would never have been discovered by accident.

If your thoughts are determined by always doing everything as specified and not taking any risks, you will not develop further. Such thoughts have a paralyzing effect and keep you trapped. Try to get rid of these fears by taking small, brave steps here and there. And don't always think first of what others might say about it.

Make up your mind for a haircut that you've always wanted to try. Season a dish differently. Give a presentation a different structure. Hair grows back, sauces can be stretched with water, presentations can be changed with just a few clicks. But if you don't try, you miss the chance of positive experiences, a compliment, praise and recognition.

Step 6: Avoid perfectionism

While fears often originate from the fact that we want to do justice to others, perfectionism is more a consequence of our own claims. Perfectionism drives us to make all decisions purely rationally. We think that otherwise we are not objective and cannot achieve the best.

That deep feelings like your gut feeling are not as easy to understand as logical considerations doesn't mean anything. Your intuition can often guide you much better and should definitely be taken into account. Even in interpersonal relationships, good decisions are based on everyone involved being heard. Therefore, when it comes to you, also listen to all parts of your body: head, heart and stomach.

7th step: decide intuitively

When you have established the connection to your inner voice again, you can practice making intuitive decisions. In the beginning, these don't have to be big, life-changing things, small things are enough to build trust in your gut feeling.

For example, "What do I eat today?", "What do I buy in the supermarket?", "What do I wear?" Or "What do I do after work?" Are decisions that your mind might make differently than your intuition. But maybe they even match, then you have definitely made the right choice.

With a little time, patience and practice you will be able to let your intellect and gut feeling work together in harmony and not against each other. Rational or intuitive - both do not have to be mutually exclusive! Because if you are in tune with your feelings, you will automatically make the right decision for you.
