Be happy: what is it actually?
One way to be happier: meditation
When are you happy If you ask different people when they are (or could be) happy, many of them tell of external circumstances: a great job, a great love, a great vacation, a great car ... Of course, these things can make you happy if you have them . But they are not a prerequisite, and that is a good thing.
Happiness is often a matter of the little things. Many small happy moments add up to great happiness. And you can take care of these little moments, no matter what the circumstances in your life are. We'll give you 20 ideas, tips and exercises to help you become happier.
Better luck in everyday life with these tips and exercises
Do things you love
In everyday stress, the things that are actually important to us often get lost. What you love is the best giver of happiness. Therefore, in order to be happy, you should make time for it regularly. If you don't even know what you like to do, it is high time you found out.
Spend time with people who are important to you
Spending a relaxing day with the family, sitting with friends, having a chat with your old schoolmate ... Spending time with people who are important to us has the best potential for moments of happiness.
Gratitude makes you feel happy almost immediately, and best of all, we can learn them. As an exercise, you can get into the habit of writing down three things each day that you are grateful for. These can be big, existential things like your children or enough to eat. But even very small moments often leave us amazed - and happy - with gratitude.
Stress is probably the greatest happiness killer of our time. If you just rush from one appointment to the next, you have neither an eye for the beautiful nor time for the things that are important to you. In addition, stress also makes you sick. Enough reasons to relieve stress in your life, right? How this works is very individual because it depends on the factors that cause you a lot of stress. Maybe you have to give up assignments, maybe resolve open conflicts or even separate yourself from certain people. Sometimes, however, it is also more small things like better time management or regular short relaxation breaks that help reduce the stress in your life.
Nature is a tremendous giver of happiness. This becomes particularly clear when we stand on the beach and look out at the sea. But also river banks, forests, flower meadows or snow-covered fields make you happy. And if it's just gray outside: At least the daylight and the air are good for us. Various studies have shown that people who are regularly outside are also happier.
Learn to say no
Anyone who repeatedly lets themselves be talked into tasks (or goods) wastes a lot of time, effort and money. To be happy also means knowing what is not good for you and then, if possible, not doing it either. Of course, it cannot always be avoided that annoying tasks are necessary from time to time. But you don't have to say yes to uncomfortable hard work that nobody else wants to do. Learn to say no and enjoy the little bliss of not having to do an unpleasant task.
Work on your dreams and visions
What goals do you want to achieve in life? What is your vision of a full life? What dreams are still waiting to come true? Take these goals, visions and dreams seriously and work every day to get closer to them. Even if fulfillment is still a long way off: Even a small step in the right direction makes you happy.
Write down moments of happiness
Probably the most effective exercise for more happiness in everyday life is this: Write down as many happy moments as possible every day. Make it a daily habit in the evening and collect at least three moments of happiness during the day. This may be difficult for you at first, but after a short time you will notice that during the day you pay more attention to what makes you happy. And that leads to significantly more moments of happiness than before.
Exercise releases endorphins and they make you happy. Exercise also improves our health. And being healthy and fit is also a good basis for happiness. Therefore, if you are not doing it anyway, this is the time to start exercising more regularly.
In meditation, the thoughts can finally come to rest and make room for relaxation. Many people therefore perceive meditation as a great factor of happiness. Just try it.
Strike a balance between give and take
Those who are constantly only concerned with their own benefit will not be happy in the long run. Those who only give and work themselves out in the process, also not. Really happy are the people who on the one hand can accept good things, but on the other hand are also happy to pass it on to others. This can refer to many areas of life: money, time, compliments, attention, help ...
Treat yourself lovingly
Let's be honest: How do you actually deal with yourself? Do you pay attention to your needs? Do you encourage yourself in your mind or do you make yourself small if something doesn't work out? Do you make sure that you get everything you need for wellbeing? Many people have the impression that other people are responsible for such things, but that is a big mistake that can quickly make you unhappy. First and foremost, it's up to you to treat yourself lovingly.
Banish things (and people) that harm you
What is not good for you? What tasks, objects or people do you get annoyed about without having good times? If there are such factors in your life, you should seriously try to break away from them. Nothing and nobody has the right to permanently harm us. Banish such things and people from your life.
Get a good night's sleep
We all know from experience that getting enough sleep is an important factor in happiness. Nevertheless, we often do far too little for it. There are many ways to ensure better sleep: Go to bed early. Ensure relaxation in the evening. Optimize the bed and the bedroom so that they provide real resting places. Adjust the daily schedule as much as possible to your own biorhythm. Refrain from alcohol. What does it depend on if you sleep badly? And how can you change that?
Find beautiful things around you
A little exercise that you can do anytime and anywhere: No matter where you are, try to find something beautiful in your surroundings. Just a tiny little thing is enough to focus your gaze on the positive and become happier with it.
Live in the here and now
You can no longer change the past and how the future will develop cannot be foreseen today. Above all, those people who manage to live a lot in the here and now are happy. This means not constantly dealing with the past and not looking for happiness in an uncertain future. If you want to be happy, be it now, whatever the circumstances.
Learn to forgive
Old anger and hurt feelings can be real happiness killers. The remedy for this: forgiveness. Many people do not want to or cannot forgive because they do not make one thing clear to themselves: Your resentment does not harm the person who did something to you, only you. The other person usually doesn't notice much of it, but you yourself have to worry about the bad mood again and again. Forgiving does not mean forgetting everything or approving of an act. It just means setting yourself free from past hurts.
Look at what you have
Many people pay particular attention to the things or skills they would like to have but not have. The neighbors have a bigger car, the girlfriend is slimmer and actually the man for life is still missing ... If you keep your thoughts on the shortage, it makes you unhappy. Rather, turn your attention to the things you already have. Because they form the basis for your happiness. You can practice this view with the exercise of gratitude that we introduced to you above.
A few years ago something amazing was discovered: the brain seems to get information about how we are doing from the muscles of the face. This means: when you smile - even if you don't feel like it - you are signaling to yourself that you are fine, and the brain pours out the right messenger substances that actually make you happier. Smiling at yourself and others can make you happy for that reason alone.
Postponing your happiness into the future doesn't work. If you want to get happier, you have to start today. Just pick two or three of the tips that you like the most and start putting them into action today.
