How profitable are coffee shops

The Schärf family sells a chain of coffee bars to TQSR

With the takeover of the Coffeeshop Company, the Austrian gastronomy expert TQSR Group is adding another strategic component to its brand portfolio. The group of companies has been the master franchisee of the Burger King brand in Austria since 2015 and operates 26 of the currently 54 Burger King restaurants in Austria. After Rosenberger, the best-known Austrian gastronomy brand, passed into the ownership of the TQSR Group in April 2019, the company is now expanding its brand portfolio with the Coffeeshop Company to include one of the best-known domestic coffee shop concepts.

Coffeeshop Company - Home in Vienna

The Coffeeshop Company, originally owned by the Schärf family, was founded in 1999 with a location in downtown Vienna. With more than 160 locations - 10 of them in Austria - it is now one of the largest coffee shop concepts in the world. With the internationally successful brand, operated as a franchise system, traditional Viennese coffee house culture meets the modern “coffee to go” trend. With its origins in Vienna, the “Home in Vienna” is deeply anchored in the brand identity.

The brand, which has been successfully established both nationally and internationally, has also undergone decisive further development in recent years under the leadership of Marco Schärf. However, according to Schärf, it is time to hand the company over to the TQSR Group to enable the brand to take the next stage of development. "With its many years of expertise in the catering sector, the TQSR Group was our favorite for the takeover from the very first conversation," explains Schärf.

Marco Schärf and the traditional brand Schärf

Marco Schärf himself will remain with the Coffeeshop Company brand in an advisory capacity. In the future, his focus will be on the family company Schärf & Sons GmbH, which he co-owns - and thus above all on the expansion of the traditional Schärf brand. In this role, he will contribute his experience to develop the brand and increasingly pursue his passionate work within the complex context of coffee and cafés. In addition, Schärf specializes in advising internationally oriented coffee and coffee house concepts.

Takeover by TQSR Group

The TQSR Group took over the Coffeeshop Company at the beginning of February. Two coffee shop locations originally owned by the Schärf Group in Austria on the one hand and the franchisor rights to all coffee shops worldwide on the other hand will be transferred to the TQSR Group. Just like Burger King and Rosenberger, the Coffeeshop Company will in future be controlled from the TQSR company headquarters in the Vienna Twin Towers. Most of the employees from the original headquarters in Neusiedl were taken over. Many more jobs will be created in the course of the planned expansion.

Growth in Austria and the world

With the acquisition of the brand and the associated franchise rights, numerous opportunities open up for the TQSR Group. "With the Coffeeshop Company, we are adopting a profitable, zeitgeist-based coffee concept that we are now deliberately subjecting to a further modernization step, especially with regard to digitization, and which we are sending on a further expansion course in Austria and internationally," said Graf.

The Coffeeshop Company will also play a key role with regard to the new multi-brand service area concept Rosehill Foodpark. "With its high-quality and diverse range of coffees, the Coffeeshop Company ideally complements existing brands such as Burger King and Rosenberger," says Graf. By 2024, all Rosenberger locations will gradually be converted into multi-brand concepts under the Rosehill Foodpark brand - each of them of course also with the Coffeeshop Company. Apart from the Rosehill Foodpark, the TQSR Group's goal is to open five to ten additional coffee shop locations across Austria every year.
