I was in the USA as an au pair for the first time 12 years ago. And then I was also plagued by homesickness for the first 2 months. Unfortunately, I didn't know any e-mails back then (I don't even know if they already existed) and calling Germany was incredibly expensive. So I made friends with the diary option. Today I sometimes read it and wonder whether I should publish it ops:
In addition, when I was homesick, I never stayed in the house, but quickly made appointments with other people, or drove to the mall or to the pub, etc. Be sure to look for people and distractions. That always helped.

Yes, and I've been living in the US for almost a year now. But I'm not homesick. Maybe because I am still in constant contact with friends and family in Germany via e-mail and phone. I also have daily full program with YMCA courses, pots, golf course, dog park etc. And in the evenings my husband is at home from work. I just don't get to think about what I should miss, what is different now, etc.
Heads up!
Anne.
