Two thirds of the penis are outside the body, one third is inside. Above all, the smooth muscle cells in the limb itself ensure that an erection can be maintained. In contrast to the pelvic floor muscles, these muscle cells can neither be moved nor trained at will.

The "potency muscles" can be trained like any other muscle

The two cavernous bodies in the penis are also connected to the pelvic floor muscles. And this can very well be strengthened through targeted exercises. This makes erections more stable, even in men without discomfort. The pelvic floor muscles can be built up and trained just like a biceps, assures the Hamburg professor for men's health, Dr. Frank Sommer. "There is the beautiful English saying 'Use it or loose it - brain, muscle, penis.'"

However, doctors like Prof. Sommer keep finding that many men do not even know where their pelvic floor is and how they can strengthen their "potency muscles". "You have to imagine sucking the tip of the penis inwards and holding it," says the doctor, describing an exercise to strengthen the muscle group. Often, patients who suffer from pelvic floor weakness are also prescribed a drug such as Viagra.

The training is suitable for patients in whom the stimulus-response mechanism and the "infrastructure" of the penis are intact, but who can only maintain an erection for a short time or whose erection is not firm enough to be able to have sex.
