Sura 9: At-Tauba (Repentance)
A renunciation on the part of Allah and His Messenger to those of the idolaters with whom you have made a contract.

Now wander around the country for four months knowing that you cannot withdraw yourselves from Allah and that Allah will shame the unbelievers!

And an announcement on the part of Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the great pilgrimage that Allah is free from the (obligation to) the idolater (s), and also His Messenger. If you repent now, it is better for you. However, if you turn away, know that you cannot withdraw yourselves from Allah! And proclaim painful punishment to those who disbelieve!

With the exception of those of the idolaters, with whom you have made a contract and who have let you lack nothing and have stood by no one against you. So fulfill their contract towards them by the deadline granted to them! Indeed, Allah loves the righteous.

When the protection months are up, kill the idolaters wherever you find them, seize them, lay siege to them and ambush them! But if they repent, keep up the prayer and pay the tax, then let them go on their way! Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

And if any of the idolaters ask you for protection, give them protection until they hear the word of Allah. Then let him reach the place where he is safe. This is because they are people who don't know.

How then should there be a contract with Allah and His Messenger for idolaters, except for those with whom you have contracted at the sheltered place of worship? As long as they behave right towards you, you behave right towards them. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous.

How (should there be a contract) when they, when they get the upper hand over you, pay attention to neither kinship ties nor (protective) treaties towards you? They please you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse. And most of them are wicked.

They have sold the signs of Allah for a low price and thus kept them from His path. Certainly how evil is what they used to do.

You do not observe any ties of kinship or (protective) treaty towards a believer. These are the transgressors.

But if they repent, keep up the prayer, and pay the levy, then they are your brothers in religion. We expound the signs for the people who know.

But if they break their oaths after the conclusion of the contract and revile your religion, then fight against the leaders of unbelief - there are no oaths for them - so that they may stop.

Will you not fight against people who broke their oaths and intended to drive the Messenger out, starting with you (with hostilities) first? Do you fear them? But Allah has a greater right to have you fear Him if you believe.

Fight them! Allah will punish them by your hands, bring them to shame, help you to win over them and heal the breasts of believing people

and let the wrath in their hearts perish. Allah accepts repentance from whomever He wills. Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise.

Or do you mean that you will be left (in peace) without Allah knowing beforehand those who have struggled among you and who have not taken any trust apart from Allah, His Messenger and the believers? And Allah is Knowledgeable of what you do.

It is not for the idolaters to populate Allah's places of worship where they bear witness against themselves through unbelief. Their works become obsolete, and in (hell) fire they will remain forever.

Certainly, Allah's places of worship are only populated by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, perform prayer, pay the tax and do not fear anyone but Allah. But these will perhaps belong to the rightly guided.

Do you equate the watering of the pilgrims and the people of the protected place of prayer (the works) with those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and struggle in Allah's path? They are not the same with Allah. And Allah does not guide the unrighteous people.

Those who believe and have emigrated and struggled with their possessions and themselves in the path of Allah have a greater privilege with Allah. These are the successful ones.

Their Lord proclaims them mercy and good pleasure and gardens in which they have constant bliss,

to stay in it forever and ever. Certainly with Allah there is great reward.

O you who believe, do not take your fathers and your brothers as patrons if they love unbelief more than faith! Those of you who confide in them are the unjust.

Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives and your kin, property that you have acquired, trade that you fear decline, and dwellings that you will enjoy are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and struggling on His path, then wait for Allah to come with His ordinance! Allah does not rightly guide the people of the wicked.

Allah has helped you to victory in many places, and also on the day of Ḥunain, when your great number pleased you but was of no use to you. The earth became narrow to you in all its vastness. Then you turned your back (to flee).

Thereupon Allah sent down His inner calm on His Messenger and on the believers, and He sent down hosts that you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. That was the reward of the unbelievers.

After all this, Allah accepts repentance from whomever He wills. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

O you who believe that the idolaters are truly unclean, they should not approach the protected place of prayer after this, their year! And if you fear poverty, Allah will make you rich through His grace if He will. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise.

Fight against those who do not believe in Allah and do not believe in Judgment Day and who do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger forbade and who do not obey the religion of truth - by those to whom the Scriptures were given - until they pay tribute pay by hand and are docile!

The Jews say, “zUzair is the Son of Allah” and the Christians say, “Al-Masīḥ is the Son of Allah.” These are their words from their (own) mouths. They use words similar to those of those who previously disbelieved. Allah fight them! How they let themselves be turned away!

They took their scholars and their monks as masters besides Allah, as well as al-Masīḥ ibna Maryam, when they were only commanded to serve one god. There is no god but Him. Praise be to Him! (Exalted is He) above what they associate with (Him).

They want to extinguish Allah's light with their mouths. But Allah insists on perfecting His light, even if the unbelievers dislike it.

It is He Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to give it the upper hand over all religion, even if it is repugnant to the idolaters.

O you who believe, many of the scholars and the monks are verily devouring the possessions of men and keeping them from the path of Allah. Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the path of Allah, proclaim painful punishment to them,

on the day when it is heated in the fire of hell over it and with it their foreheads, their sides and their backs are branded: this is what you have hoarded for yourselves. Now it costs what you used to hoard!

Certainly the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah on the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are protected. That is the right religion. So do not wrong yourself in them. And fight against the idolaters all as they fight against you all! And know that Allah is with those who fear God!

Postponing a month is just an increase in disbelief. This will mislead those who disbelieve; they declare it unprotected one year and protected another year, to be equal to the number of what Allah has declared protected; thus they declare unprotected what Allah has declared protected. Their evil deeds have been embellished for them. Allah does not rightly guide the unbelieving people.

O you who believe, what about you, that when it is said to you: "Move out in the way of Allah", you let yourself sink heavily to the earth? Are you more satisfied with this life than with the hereafter? But the enjoyment of this life will (appear) only small in the hereafter.

If you do not move out, He will punish you with painful punishment and replace you with another people, and you (cannot) harm Him in any way. Allah has power over everything.

If you do not help him, Allah helped him (even then) when those who disbelieved drove him out as one of two; when they were both in the cave and when he said to his companion: “Don't be sad! Surely Allah is with us! ”So Allah sent His inner calm down on him and strengthened him with hosts that you did not see and humbled the word of those who disbelieved, while the word of Allah is the high one. Allah is Mighty and Wise.

Move out, easy or difficult, and struggle with your possessions and your own person in the path of Allah. It is better for you if you only know.

If it were about near good fortune and a moderate journey, they would truly follow you. But the distance is too far for them. And yet they will swear by Allah: “If we could, we would indeed go out with you.” In doing so, they destroyed themselves. But Allah knows that they truly lie.

Allah forgive you! Why did you allow them (to lag behind) before you saw clearly those who are true and you know the liars?

Those who believe in Allah and Judgment Day do not ask your permission not to struggle with their possessions and their own person. And Allah knows about those who fear God.

Only those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who doubt their hearts ask for your permission; so they hesitate in their doubts.

If they (really) wanted to go out, they would have made preparations for it. But Allah was repugnant to their undressing, and so He held them back. And it was said: "So stay (at home) with those who stay (at home)!"

If they had gone out with you, they would only have confused you and would indeed have walked among you seeking to tempt you. And among you there are some who keep listening to you (again and again). And Allah knows about the unrighteous.

They have sought temptation before and reversed matters for you until the truth came and the order of Allah appeared, although they disliked it.

There are some among them who say, "Allow me (to lag behind) and do not expose me to temptation!" Yet they have fallen into temptation. And verily, hell includes the unbelievers.

If something good hits you, they are sorry. However, if you have an accident, they say, "We took care of our own business before," and happily turn away.

Say: We will only be hit by what Allah has determined for us. He is our patron. Believers should rely on Allah.

Say: Do you expect something (other than) for us than one of the two most beautiful things? We expect for you that Allah will strike you with punishment from Him or through our hands. So just wait and see! Certainly, we will wait with you.

Say: Spend voluntarily or reluctantly, you will not (yet) accept it! You are wicked people.

And nothing (else) prevents their expenses from being accepted by them, except that they deny Allah and His Messenger, only sluggishly go to prayer and only reluctantly spend.

You shall not please their possessions or their children in this way. Allah only wants to punish them in this life, and (that) their souls (in death) go there while they are unbelieving.

And they swear by Allah that they are indeed of you, while they are not of you, but are fearful people.

If they found a place of refuge, or cave, or (otherwise) a loophole, they would truly turn there, and run away.

And among them there are some who nag you about the alms. When it is given to them, they show pleasure. But if they are not given any of this, they immediately show displeasure.

If only they were satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger granted them and said, “Our satisfaction is Allah. Allah will grant us (some) of His grace and also His Messenger. Certainly, after Allah is our desire ”.

The alms are only for the poor, the needy, those who are busy, those whose hearts are to be acquainted, (the ransom of) slaves, the indebted, in the way of Allah and (for) the Son of the way, as Obligation from Allah. Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise.

Among them there are those who harm the Prophet and say, “He is an ear.” Say, (He is) an ear of good to you. He believes in Allah and believes those who believe, and (he is) a mercy to those of you who believe. But for those who harm Allah's Messenger there will be a painful punishment.

They swear to you by Allah to please you. But Allah - and (also) His Messenger - has a greater right to have them please Him if they are believers.

Do they not know that for those who act contrary to Allah and His Messenger - that there is the fire of hell for him to remain in it forever? That is the great shame.

The hypocrites fear that a sura might be revealed about them, telling them what is in their hearts. Say: Make fun (only)! Allah will bring out what you fear.

And if you ask them, they will most certainly say: "We only had (rambling) conversations and joked." Say: Have you made fun of Allah and His Signs and His Messenger?

Don't apologize You became incredulous after you had (accepted) the faith. If We (also) forgive a part of you, We punish another part (for) that they were wrongdoers.

The hypocrites and the hypocrites come from one another. They command the reprehensible and forbid the right and keep their hands closed. They forgot Allah and so He forgot them. Certainly the hypocrites are the (true) wrongdoers.

Allah has promised the hypocrites and the unbelievers the fire of hell to stay in it forever. It is enough for them. And Allah has cursed them, and there is constant punishment for them.

(It's) like those who were before you. They had more strength than you and more possessions and children. They enjoyed their share, and then you enjoyed your share as those who were before you enjoyed their share. And you had (rambling) conversations like the conversations they had. Their works become obsolete in this world and in the hereafter. Those are the losers.

Have they not heard of those who came before them, the people of Nūḥs, the ʿĀd and the Ṯamūd, the people of Ibrāhīms, the inhabitants of Madyan and the overturned cities? Their messengers came to them with the clear evidence. It is never Allah Who has wronged them, but they have wronged themselves.

Believing men and women are one another's protectors. They command the right and forbid the reprehensible, establish prayer and pay the levy, and obey Allah and His Messenger. It is them whom Allah will have mercy on. Indeed, Allah is Mighty and Wise.

Allah has promised the believing men and women gardens, rushed through by brooks, to stay in them forever, and good dwellings in the gardens of Eden. But the pleasure of Allah is greater. That is the great success.

O Prophet, strive against the unbelievers and hypocrites and be hard on them! Your refuge will be hell - a bad outcome!

They swear by Allah that they did not say (it). But they said the word of unbelief and after having (accepted) Islam they became unbelieving. They intended (to do) what they (yet) did not achieve. And they only resented that Allah - and (also) His Messenger - had made them rich in His grace. Now if they repent, it is better for them. But if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and in the hereafter, and they will have neither protectors nor helpers on earth.

There are some among them who have made a commitment to Allah: if He grants us some of His grace, we will certainly give alms and we will most certainly be among the righteous.

But when He had granted them His grace, they were stingy and reluctantly turned away.

As a result, He placed hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they met Him for breaking what they had promised to Allah and for telling lies.

Do they not know that Allah knows their secret and confidential conversations and that Allah is the All-Knower of hidden things?

Those who mock the volunteers among the believers for the alms and (also) those who find nothing but their effort (to perform) and then scoff at them - Allah scoffs at them and it becomes painful for them Give punishment.

Asking forgiveness for them or not asking forgiveness for them; if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them. This is because they have denied Allah and His Messenger. Allah does not rightly guide the people of the wicked.

Those left behind were happy to have stayed behind Allah's Messenger (at home), and they hated struggling with their possessions and with themselves in Allah's path. And they said, “Don't go out in the heat!” Say: The fire of hell is even hotter; if they would understand!

Let them laugh a little and cry often as a reward for what they have earned.

If Allah makes you return to part of them and they ask your permission to go out, then say: you will never go out with me and you will not fight with me against any enemy. You were (yes) satisfied for the first time with staying seated (at home). Now stay (at home) with those who stay behind!

And never pray over any of them who have died and do not stand by their grave! They denied Allah and His Messenger, and they died as wrongdoers.

You shouldn't like their possessions and their children. Allah only wants to punish them in this world with it, and (that) their souls (in death) go there while they are unbelieving.

And when a sūra is revealed (as revelation): “Believe in Allah and toil with His Messenger”, (then) the well-to-do among them ask your permission and say: “Let us be with them who stay seated (at home)! "

They were content to be with the women left behind, and their hearts were sealed; so they don't understand.

But the Messenger and those who believed with him struggled with their possessions and their own person. These are the ones for whom the good things will happen, and these are the ones who will do well.

Allah has prepared gardens for them, rivers running through them, to dwell in them forever; that is the great success.

And those of the desert Arabs who wanted to apologize came for permission. And those who lied to Allah and His Messenger remained seated. A painful punishment will hit those of them who disbelieve.

There is no need for distress (because of staying at home) for the weak, for the sick and for those who cannot find anything to spend if they behave honestly towards Allah and His Messenger. There is no possibility (of prosecuting them) against those who do good - Allah is Forgiving and Merciful -,

and (also) not against those who, when they came to you so that you would give them (on what) they (could) ride, and you said: "I can't find anything I can let you ride on", turned away, while their eyes flowed with tears from sadness that they found nothing to spend.

There is only one possibility (to prosecute) against those who ask your permission even though they are rich. They were content to be with the women left behind. Allah has sealed their hearts so that they will not know.

They will apologize to you when you return to them. Say: don't apologize! We won't believe you (yet). Allah has made known to us of the news about you. Allah will see what you do and His Messenger (also). Thereupon you will be brought back to the knower of the hidden and the revealed, and then he will make known to you what you used to do.

They will swear to you by Allah when you return to them to leave them alone. So leave them alone, for they are an abomination! Their refuge is hell as a reward for what they have earned.

They swear to you that you will be satisfied with them. And if you are satisfied with them, Allah is not satisfied with the wicked people.

The desert Arabs are more disbelieving and hypocritical, and it is more fitting that they do not know the limits of what Allah has revealed on His Messenger (as revelation). And Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise.

Among the desert Arabs there are (also) some who see what they spend (as a donation) as an enforced payment and wait for the turn of fate for you. The evil turn of fate will be against them. Allah is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.

And among the desert Arabs there are (but also) some who believe in Allah and the Last Day and see what they spend (as a donation) as a means of approaching Allah, and (also) the prayers of the Messenger. It is certainly a means of rapprochement for them (to Allah). Allah will make them enter into His Mercy. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

The hurried first of the emigrants and the helpers and those who have followed them in the best way - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. And He prepared gardens for them, rushed through by brooks, to dwell in them forever and ever; that is the great success.

There are hypocrites among the desert Arabs around you and (also) among the inhabitants of al-Madina who are practiced in hypocrisy. You don't know her, but we know her. We will punish them twice, and then they will be subjected to an enormous punishment.

And (there are) others who confess their sins. You have mixed one righteous act with another evil one. Perhaps Allah will accept their repentance. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Take an alms from their possessions, with which you purify and purify them, and pray for them, because your prayer is a reassurance for them! Allah is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.

Do they not know that it is Allah Who receives repentance from His servants and takes the alms, and that Allah is the Repent-Receiving and Merciful?

And say: works! Allah will see what you do, and (also) His Messenger and the believers. And you will be brought back to the knower of the hidden and the revealed, and then he will make known to you what you used to do.

And others (again) will be put on hold until the order of Allah is. Either He punishes them or He accepts their repentance. Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise.

And (there) are (also) those who have taken a place of worship with the intention of harm and unbelief and to divide the believers and for observation for the one who previously waged war against Allah and His Messenger. They will most certainly swear, “We only wanted the best.” But Allah testifies that they are indeed liars.

Never stand in it (for prayer)! A place of prayer founded on the fear of God from day one truly has a greater right to your standing in it. In it are men who love to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who purify themselves.

Is he who has built his building on fear of Allah and (His) pleasure better, or he who has built his building on the edge of a falling slope, so that he falls with him into the fire of hell? And Allah does not guide the unrighteous people.

The structure they have built will not cease to cause doubt until their hearts are torn to pieces. Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise.

Allah has bought their own person and property from the believers in order that the (paradise) garden belongs to them: They fight in Allah's way, and so they kill and are killed. (That is) a binding promise for Him in truth in the Torah, the Gospel and the Qurʾān. And who is more faithful than Allah in keeping his agreement? So rejoice in the purchase you have made, because that is the great success!

(.. for the believers,) those who repent, those who serve (Allah), those who praise, those who wander (in the path of Allah), those who bow down, those who prostrate themselves, those who do what is right and what is reprehensible, the limits of Allah Pay attention \ .. and proclaim good news to the believers.

It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the idolaters, even if they were relatives, after they have realized that they will be inmates of the infernal fire.

And Ibrahim's request for forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah, he renounced him. Ibrāhīm was indeed tender-hearted and indulgent.

Allah will never let people go astray after He has guided them until He has given them clarity as to what to guard against. Surely Allah knows everything.

Allah is in control of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and lets die. Apart from Allah you have neither protector nor helper.

Allah has accepted the repentance of the Prophet, the emigrants and the helpers who followed him in the hour of distress after the hearts of a group of them nearly wandered. Then He accepted their repentance - certainly, He is Gracious and Merciful to them -

and (the repentance) of the three who were left behind until the earth became narrow to them for all its breadth and their souls became narrow to them, knowing that there is no refuge from Allah but Him. Then He turned to them forgiving, that they might repent. Certainly, Allah is Repentant and Merciful.

O you who believe, fear Allah and be with those who are true!

It is not for the people of al-Madina and the desert Arabs around them to lag behind the Messenger of Allah and to prefer themselves (and their lives) to him. This (is) because they do not find thirst, hardship or hunger in Allah's way, nor do they take a step that makes the disbelievers angry, nor do something bad to an enemy without a righteous deed being recorded for them. Indeed, Allah will not let the reward of those who do good be lost.

Nor do they make any donations, whether small or large, nor do they cross a valley without it being written down for them (as a good deed) so that Allah will reward them for the best of what they have done.

It is not for the believers to go out all together. If only a part of every group of them would go out to learn (more) of the religion and to warn their people when they return to them, so that they might be careful.

O you who believe, fight those who are near you from the unbelievers! They should find hardness in you. And know that Allah is with those who fear God!

When a sūra (revelation) is revealed, there are some among them who say, "To whom of you has this (e sūra) increased his faith?" As for those who believe, it has increased their faith, and they are happy about the good news.

But as for those in whose hearts there is disease, it adds (further) abominations to their abominations, and they die as unbelievers.

Don't they see that they are tested once or twice a year? But they do not regret this, and they do not consider.

When a sura (revelation) is revealed, they look at each other: “Anyone seeing you?” Then they turn away. Allah has turned their hearts away because they are people who do not understand.

A messenger from your own ranks has now come to you. It is depressing for him when you are in distress, (he is) eager to help you, gracious and merciful to the believers.

But if they turn away, say: Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. In Him I rely and He is the Lord of the mighty throne.

Sura 9: At-Tauba (Repentance)
