When will the PS2 become a collector's item?

Collecting Playstation 2 - is it even worth it?

  • Hiho

I came across a PS2 slim by chance. Now the question arises, what should I do with it?

To get something out of it: I had a PS2 back then and then sold it again at some point, unlike all the other old consoles I've had since childhood. With the best will in the world, I can't remember a legendary game for the PS2 that would have really captivated me back then, unlike all the other consoles I own.

The current situation is that PS2 games are thrown cheaper by the dozen on the junk and that's why I ask myself whether it might not make sense to buy a small but fine collection.

to put it point by point:

    1. Can you handle graphics these days? It's not really retro charm and compared to current hardware it stinks quite a bit.
    2. Which classics should you absolutely have?
    3. Are there games that are really rare, good and expensive?
    4. How do I develop an emotional bond with the black box?
    5. Do I even need this thing next to GameCube and Dreamcast?
    6. What else should you pimp the box with? Cables, mods, superduper controllers etc?
That signature is as pointless as the blue and red colors in the French national flag.
  • I would say in general: just leave it. Think the stuff is better off with someone else.
Sounds stupid but I think so. If you have no connection to the part, there is no point in putting it on the shelf.
  • I also think that the combination of "came across a PS2 by chance" and "with the best will in the world can't remember a legendary game for the PS2 off the cuff" cannot create a lot of enthusiasm for a collection
  • Thanks for the answers so far. ^^

Another 7th question came to mind:

Is there a mod that allows PS1 NTSC games to run on a PAL PS2 slim?
That signature is as pointless as the blue and red colors in the French national flag.

  • If you haven't developed an affinity for the PS2 yet, neither of you will be in the future.
I also find your approach quite strange. Otherwise I can only join cyrex. Love it or leave it.
front (viewed in the direction of travel) "from the inside top center to the outside bottom" and rear "from the outside top to the inside center"
  • It was the same with the Amiga. Previously seen once at a buddy. Never had.
And now I couldn't do anything with it either. What has to be 100% due to the cover.
DOS PC is almost the same and I do something with it. But the Amiga had to go again.
Under Construction! A 3D remake of the signature is in progress.

    A: You need to know.

    2. Which classics should you absolutely have?
    A: You need to know

    3. Are there games that are really rare, good and expensive?
    A: Yes

    4. How do I develop an emotional bond with the black box?
A: Have a nice dinner with the console, or the two of you go to the theater etc ... or just play.

    5. Do I even need this thing next to GameCube and Dreamcast?
A: You don't need anything, you don't need a GC or DC either. If you ask yourself if you need something then you don't need it.

    6. What else should you pimp the box with? Cables, mods, superduper controllers etc?
A: Wireless controllers are very useful. amazon.de/CSL-Wireless-Playsta…-Controller/dp/B00935CL9G

PS: Why are such threads not in general or offtopic? Just like TOP 10 games.

I'm too old for this shit!
  • Well, here in my region, PS2 games are really thrown for an apple and an egg, so I find the question of pearls that have escaped me in my career somehow legitimate.
The rest is just an accessory.

    @cyrex
You judge me completely wrong, I am a family man and definitely too old / grown up to have to be cool. And the "handicapped" is also quite unnecessary.

  • The PS2 as well as the Xbox are currently at their lowest peak.
That means that it is normal to get the games for an apple and an egg at the moment.
So collectors are taking hold of them now, it doesn't get any cheaper.
I'm noticing an increase again with the Xbox, especially with the hardware.
A year ago you could get them for half an apple and half an egg.

Pranks hindered, sat meaningless. What I want to say, you don't need to ask the question to others, just yourself.

  • Your spoiler of fun ;
A Ps2 is definitely worth it. Games have appeared in all possible genres, I would say one of the most diverse game libraries there is.

If you are lucky enough to get a chip, everything is even better, not because of the possibility of playing blanks, but because of the colorful world of import games for PS1 and 2, which is then open to you.

On the LCD LED Flat everything looks shit, of course, but if you still have an old 16: 9 tube ... the Ps2 feels right at home with it.

I also have a few game tips, which are only available on Ps2 or which I like in some other way:

R-Type Final, Gradius V, Sly Racoon, Yakuza 1 + 2, God Hand, Ape Escape, Shadow of the Colossus, Lumines, Burnout 3 etc. (I left out role-playing games and first-person shooters, not my case.)
In addition, various oldie game collections such as:
    Metal Slug Anthology
    Taito Lgends 1 + 2
    Activision Athology
    Etc.
In Japan there are still great remakes of "Bonk", "Adventure Island", "Contra", and the great arcade 1: 1 implementations by "Hamster" such as: "Moon Cresta", "Burger Time", "Pooyan", "Time Pilot", "Scramble" and many more.

Oh damn, I have to agree with that.
Because, for a whole range of arcade ports, the PS2 might really be worth it. But not only
the Sega parts. There are also Gradius, Street Fighter, the Taito Collection etc.

  • Games as an investment make me sick.
Sega - The programmed madness. WonderSwan: 173/219. By far the best here in the forum. Games matter.
  • I actually only connected my PS2 for the occasional round of OutRun 2006 CtC. Bought in 2005 due to Dragon Quest VIII (best !! 11) and FF XII (never started ...). Otherwise I have pretty much all collections from Sega, Taito, Capcom, Midway, etc. Great shit

    • The console with the most game releases to date.
    • All genres are represented and there are many hits and quasi classics.
    • She has a lot of good niche games (Katamari Damaci).
    • Homebrew enables games from HDD, but only in the original model.
    • The PS2 has an incredibly blurred picture thanks to the continuous use of 480i / 512i.
    • There is PSX multi-region support only with Modchip and installing it is a high art.
    • The drive is very fragile! Many consoles from the first 3-4 years no longer read media.
    • With the Slim, you can quickly break off the lid or bend something. A lot of material was saved.
    • The fan is actually only bearable from the later slim models. Especially if you are used to silent consoles.
